Dear Team Members,
It is with a heavy heart that we are sharing the news that our coach, friend, and teammate, Sabine Weiser, passed away on Tuesday, September 3rd. Sabine was a kind and selfless person, and we were lucky to have her on our team. As a friend and as a coach, she enthusiastically helped swimmers of all levels to achieve their goals. She will be missed dearly by all.
Sabine's talent for swimming was discovered early and from a young age she trained and lived at a boarding school for elite swimmers in her native East Germany. She competed in national championships and represented East Germany in international competitions as part of the Junior National Team. After a break of 20+ years from swimming, Sabine joined WMST in 2006 and rediscovered her love for the sport. She began coaching at the Shadowbend YMCA and worked there as swim teacher, TRX instructor, and Masters coach from 2008-2012, expanding the existing Masters program to include evening workouts and an adult-learn-to-swim group. Sabine started coaching at WMST in 2010 and was Head Coach for the varsity swim team of The John Cooper School 2011-2012, until her family was relocated to England for three years. She returned as a coach with WMST in 2015 and truly enjoyed coaching Masters swimmers of all levels.
After Sabine’s diagnosis of cervical cancer she underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation as part of her treatment program. Even throughout these many therapies, Sabine continued to coach with WMST as her energy and chemo/radiation schedule allowed. On September 3, 2019, Sabine lost her long fought battle with cancer and will be forever remembered and loved by her husband - Patricio, her children – Lukas & Emilia, her family and friends, and the entire WMST community.
In her honor, WMST has renamed the "November Classic" swim meet to the "Sabine Weiser November Classic".
We will let you know about service details as soon as they are made available.
The 2019 South Central Zone Long Course Championship Meet was attended by 14 WMST swimmers over the July 19-21 weekend. WMST placed 5th out of 55 teams in attendance and was led by a veteran squad of swimmers who broke several, Zone, National, and World records.
The team’s performance was headlined by the World Record breaking swim of Joann Leilich in the Women’s 80-84 200 LCM Breast in a time of 3:59.55. Joann Leilich broke records in four events: 4 Zone records (400 Free, 100 Breast, 50 Breast, 200 Breast), 2 National records (100 Breast, 200 Breast), and 1 World record (200 Breast).
